Welcome! My name is Kristen Jacobsen, and I'm the owner of Cathartic Space Counseling. If you've landed on this site, you might be wondering: how can therapy help me?  Please allow me to take this opportunity to share the answer.

I once had a client tell me when he first began therapy, it felt like he had 40 suitcases (i.e. baggage) disorganized and strewn about. When we eventually terminated his treatment, he explained he now felt like he had 2 neatly packed suitcases sitting in the corner. Those suitcases may always be there, as we all have impactful past experiences, but they would no longer be creating distress. 

We often spend so much time worrying about the future or ruminating about the past, we are not present in the moment, and we miss out on important life experiences.  Our goal at Cathartic Space Counseling is to guide you through the therapeutic process and provide you with a safe, encouraging, and non-judgmental environment.  Within this therapeutic relationship, you will be able to understand your emotions more authentically, gain insight into inhibiting thought processes, change counterproductive patterns of behavior, and develop healthy ways of coping.

At Cathartic Space Counseling, we see therapy as being extremely beneficial, as it sifts through thoughts and emotions to make sense of why we think, feel, and act the way we do. Once those elements are identified, we can begin to figure out how we create order from chaos.  Our work together will be collaborative, and our time together will be devoted to you and your needs.  We will explore how you got to this place in your life, and implement protective strategies so these emotions do not continue to become destructive habits or patterns.  Take this opportunity to invest in yourself and experience more contentment and fulfillment in life.   

Origin of "cathartic"

 

Catharsis and cathartic both trace to the Greek word kathairein, meaning “to cleanse, purge.” Catharsis entered English as a medical term having to do with purging the body of unwanted material. The adjective cathartic entered English with a meaning descriptive of such a physically cleansing purge. It didn’t take long for people to start using these words figuratively in reference to emotional release and spiritual cleansing.
