What is trauma?

Trauma is an experience or situation that is emotionally painful or distressing.  It overwhelms one's ability to cope and leaves them feeling powerless.  Particular forms of trauma are directly related to chronic fear and anxiety.  These often take the form of:

  • Physical Abuse
  • Sexual Assault
  • Verbal Abuse
  • Emotional Abuse
  • Witnessing Violence
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Neglect


There are also more subtle and insidious forms of trauma, such as:

  • Discrimination
  • Oppression
  • Racism
  • Sexism 
  • Exposure to drug abuse/alcoholism
